Evaluating the size of the penis
In relation to the size and shape of the penis, men can be classified simplistically into two broad groups. The first are those with a penis at rest short and wide, and rather elastic that stretches and lengthens considerably during erection. The other group includes those with a long penis and makes an impression when flaccid, but almost no increase in erection size, which simply becomes more rigid. As seen naked in the shower, the first group of men may think their penis is abnormally small compared with the other member of the group. Both are quite normal, just different.
Obesity and a particularly thick pubic hair can make the penis appear smaller. Obese individuals develop a layer of fat in the pubic region in which the penis at rest tends to sink. The appearance of the member can improve with weight loss and cutting the excess pubic hair. Very obese men do not even get to see the penis, being hidden by his bulging abdomen.
When measuring the penis is important to distinguish the difference in size featuring erect and at rest.
Many men are concerned about the apparent size of their penis flaccid (at rest), and they fear the ridicule of others when they see them naked in the shower, or ridicule from their intimate partners to undress. The flaccid penis size varies considerably, from 5cm up to 10cm. Penis size at rest is not related to its size in erection.
The length of the penis depends on its intrinsic anatomy of compliance and the possible "burial" by neighboring structures (most frequently, fat in the pubic area). The flaccid penis length is not correlated with height and weight, just as there are no statistically significant differences in age.
Studies, which are mixed by the method of measurement and the study population, indicate that the average length measured from the pubic skin (just where the penis joins the body) to the opening end (urinary opening) is more or less as follows:
- Unstretched, flaccid: 8.8 inches long
- Upright, with erection: 12.89 inches long.
